It is generally known that Furnace Carbon Black (FCB) is not the same as recovered Carbon Black (rCB). Nonetheless, many manufacturers continue to claim that their rCB end product has equal product characteristics as FCB. However, reality is very different. To avoid confusion in the marketplace, work is being done to create a standard quality bench mark for rCB. Research into standardizing and product performance is being led by Dr. Norris and Dr. Twigg.

Despite extensive research, vulcanization has historically been a non-reversible process with the result that it has not been possible to re-use vulcanized rubber in the production of new rubber products like the manufacturing of new tires.
De-vulcanization is the reverse of the rubber vulcanization process. The sulphur bonds are opened up and the chemical characteristics of the de-vulcanized material now resemble virgin rubber compound.
